Am I A Twittering, Blogging Fool?

Am I A Twittering, Blogging Fool?

This month I shook it up a bit and after suffering boot camp with Eric and enduring a painful Twitter party, I have a newly discovered empathy for salmon swimming upstream.

Many people have expressed their concern that I must be on crack to wake up before the break of dawn to endure physical torture and, to add insult to injury, when they hear that I am an avid Twitterer they look at me as if I am a crack addict with turrets syndrome.

Up here in the mountains, there are many entrepreneurs that have designed the perfect life where they have tied in their passion with the outdoors with an innovative paying job which often does not lend itself to twittering. But the locals sure do enjoy making fun of social networking. I don’t blame their discern and love the humor that is brought on by twittering. One of my favorites is a video of  Dan taking his tweets to the streets. If I were not an aspiring writer searching globally for an audience, I would stay far away from Facebook and Twitter.

Yesterday I went to the Two Rivers Basalt football orientation meeting for Brevitt and had to tell the coach that I would be simultaneously listening to him and Twittering in a Sprite Back-to-School Twitter party. The parents took this and ran with it laughing at their little twitter jokes as I sat in the bleachers searching for a wireless signal with my laptop held high in the air.

The Twitter party was a success and they managed to earn the 25,000 points needed to get My Coke Reward School Points but for me the Twitter party was a bust. I was hoping for some insight and discussion on back to school issues but was deeply disappointed. They needed some controversial comments to spice up the party so me and me beloved mum, who is visiting for three weeks, took it upon ourselves to deliver:

  • American schools should be encouraging language programs because of globalization
  • It’s a disgrace that art programs are being cut in public schools. We are fostering a generation of culturally illiterate adults
  • Why don’t American schools have quality local, fresh food cooked on the premises like the French?
  • Wish that Coke and Sprite would develop a non high fructose corn syrup soda. There I said it.
  • Electronic information should not supplant books

Our comments seemed to have gotten lost in the proverbial Twitter black hole and were not commented upon by any of the other party gatherers.

As this month comes to an end, I am reflective on the changes that have taken place. I have completed my first paid job as an online Contributing Writer and only have one more week of boot camp and I feel good. Not magnificent, but really, really good.

Eric’s work outs have become progressively more insufferable and I have enjoyed rising to the challenge with my new found strength and as for the Sprite Campaign, I have already given my money earned to the Chris Waddell One Revolution Campaign and am ready for my next job.

By the end of next week, all three boys will be back in school and the leaves will be changing on the trees.  I am in no way ready for summer to end and dread the changing temperatures but have enjoyed the new challenges that have eased the monotony of everyday living.

Next month, my biggest challenge will be to learn the elements of football and to help the boys with their homework. I will do my best to embrace the changing temperatures as I dive into my writing in the two and a half days I have without children. Who knows what other challenges I will take on in the name of the blog. It’s all one big fascinating adventure.PICT0009

Hi Jillian – Well, you asked such Intelligent questions at the party, the kinds of questions that quite frankly I would have screamed out – I used to take on the school board here over much the same issues a long 15-20 years ago. Sad to see the people are as receptive now, as they were back then!!!

And don’t even talk about leaves turning yet! I’m still waiting for RED tomatoes in my garden. I hope the red before the frost! This has been our coolest summer on record I think. Of course that gives rise to all the idiots who say “See? No REAL global warming goin’ on! It’s all a hoax.”

Just came over from SITS. Happy Saturday Sharefest! I will be back to visit when I have more time. I’m interested to read more about your writing. Have a great weekend!

  3. I don’t have kids of my own, but certainly know a lot and also wish they were being educated in a more globally minded way, not to mention fed healthier.

I don’t think you’re nuts for getting up early, working out and hopping onto FB, Twitter or any other technology-based communication tool. I’m all for it, and even though I have no reason to each day, I usually get up around 4:30 a.m. just to read my favorite blogs, send emails, work on my book and by 7:30, workout for a couple hours. Granted if I had my druthers I’d also be in bed every night by 9!

Fun post – I enjoyed reading it!

I too am waiting for red tomatoes and have my boys on guard with slingshots to ward off the marmots! Today I went for a run and welcomed the warmth of the sun and the green fields. You are right, we have many more warm days ahead of us and I will be soaking it all in.

As for those who deny global warming, I feel a really good post coming on!

    Hello Jillian,

Nice blog you have, this time I did the following and followed you over from Lance’s blog :)

The whole twitter world is an interesting and funny one indeed. Some people say it is silly and useless while others love it and find it very valuable. I rather like it – no extremes, but it is a great tool if used properly…

So I am glad to hear all worked out well for you in the end :)

Such good questions – and the one I would add for our school district – why don’t we have seat belts on the buses?!
Love your blog! I thank your friend Gretchen for leading me here!

  10. Jillian says:

Why don’t we have seat belts on buses??? I ask that question all the time. It’s not as if there have never been any bus accidents.

    Thanks for visiting!
