“Why did you have to get my favorite flavor?” I asked salivating over the Cappuccino and Blackraspberry ice cream cones that Brevitt and Tucker were eating as we sat in front of Paradise Bakery watching the people go by.
“Can I have a small bite,” I asked Brevitt, who loves anything with coffee in it.
“No,” he said refusing me.
“Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth,” I said.
“How bout you, my good son,” I said to Tucker.
“No,” he said running away from me.
The more I watched them licking the rich melting ice cream the more I realized that I didn’t just want a bite but that I needed a bite.
“Look at that funny man crossing the street,” I said excitedly and as soon as they turned their heads I lunged for a bite causing the three of us to crash to the ground, their desperate arms holding the ice cream cones high in the air like champion Olympians. As we stood up wiping the spilled drops of ice cream from our clothes I smiled sheepishly at our growing audience and it was then that I realized that I might have a bit of a sugar problem. “But mommy, you aren’t even eating sugar anymore,” they complained. “Well, today I am,” I announced.
A few minutes later they asked me why my head was in my hands and I looked up, my eyes glazed over, and I groaned, “I feel nauseous and woozy. Next time, no matter how much I ask, don’t let me have a bite. That sugar is evil.”
That night my in-laws came over and we enjoyed a delicious birthday dinner that I had prepared for Wade and for dessert we had Wade’s favorite, mint chocolate chip ice cream cake from Kaleidoscoops Ice Cream Parlor in Glenwood. Normally I would have no problem abstaining from eating this type of cake but the topping was fudge frosting with ooey gooey caramel dripping all over. I don’t know about you but I cannot resist anything ooey and gooey. “Mommy, you are going to put your head in your hands again, remember?” I heard Tucker saying as the sugar began to harden my arteries. As I laughed I noticed out of the corner of my eye that Wade was quietly repackaging the cake. “What are you doing?” I growled at him anchoring my fork into the cake, forcing him to stop. “Well…I know you will be mad at yourself in the morning and so I’m putting it away.” He was lucky that his parents were there or I may have bitten his hand as he took away my sinful pleasure.
It’s true I have cut sugar from my diet and I have been quite fine without it. In fact, when I’m not eating processed sugar or flour products I actually crave the good and green stuff, a rarity for me. But as soon as I introduce sugar back into my system I only want more sugar and carbohydrates, forget the green stuff. But I’m going off of it again, as soon as I finish up that ice cream cake that is beckoning me to fetch it from the freezer and in the meantime I thought I would share this article with you from Ezinearticles.com:
Processed sugar has many harmful effects throughout the body and can cause major imbalances in the organ systems. You could say that sugar tends to throw off the homeostatic balance of the whole body by increasing the production of adrenaline by many times. In essence, sugar stimulates the nervous system by inducing a flight or fight response.
This is obviously not a healthy process. This intense reaction of the body increases the production of cortisone, which suppresses immune function and can lead to other health disorders.
The daily intake of sugar leads to many other imbalances and malfunctioning of the bodily processes. High sugar consumption leads to an overly acidic body and in turn will cause the body to strip nutrients from its reserves to counterbalance this effect. This can eventually cause the body to take calcium from the bones and teeth since calcium is the primary mineral used to neutralize high acid in the cells. Osteoporosis and arthritic conditions can result from this continued process.
Sugar and its Link to Weight Gain
Excess sugar consumption will eventually effect every organ in the body. Primarily, sugar is stored in the liver as glucose. Since the liver’s capacity to store sugar in this form is limited, the liver will start to expand almost like a balloon with continued daily sugar intake. When the livers’ capacity has been filled, the excess glycogen (glucose) is returned to the blood in the form of fatty acids (fat). The fatty acid compounds are then taken to various parts of the body and are stored as fat deposits in the buttocks, belly, breasts and hips since these are the most inactive body parts.
The consumption of excess processed (refined) carbohydrates has the same effect on the body. Eating foods with refined white flours and other enriched products can cause the same physiological effects. Consuming excess pasta, rice, chips, pretzels, and other high processed carbohydrates can lead to fat deposits on the body.

I am a sugar junkie – cold turkey is the only way to go
.-= Fiona´s last blog ..Success at Home and Work on a Platter Blonde Style =-.
o.k. Jillian, my Isagenix coach. Tonight I must come clean as I am
“sugered out on a huge piece of chocolate cake from my friend
chrissy’s birthday dinner. As I indulged, the girls asked, is this o.k.
on your fabulously successful program that you are enjoying so much.
“what’s it called” they asked. ISAGENIX, and it sure is working as they
agreed. Great diet, we want one. Call Jillian, she fixed me up. LOVE IT !
Deeds, the way I see it, if we are pouring nutrients into our body on a daily basis than we can indulge a little, can’t we? Life is just way to short to take it all so seriously.
How are your pants fitting? Looser? You know it baby.
Fiona, you definitely seem like the cold turkey kinda gal. I’m cold turkey, hot turkey, cold turkey, hot turkey, middle of the road turkey. Get my drift?
I’m like you- cold turkey, hot turkey and so on and so on. I can go cold turkey for some time until I’m hit with a nasty bout of PMS and then all bets are off- cookie monster is IN DA HOUSE! It’s all downhill after that! LOL!
Vivianne, we cookie monsters need to hang together. If the sugar is not in the house I’m okay but lately it’s been everywhere I go, tempting me with the most incredibly frosted red velvet cupcakes and chewy cookies and of course, ice cream cakes. Sometimes we have the mental ability to say no and sometimes we’re all like, “give it to me baby!”
Hi Jillian! WELL DONE, girl! Sugar, flour and dairy – chemical nightmares for the body chemistry to deal with and the causes of our nutritional impoverishment which invites disease. Sugar is death by installment! If you read about other cultures that do not consume the ridiculous amount of these poisons like we do, it is easy to see where their good health comes from – not eating this crap!
I gave up sugar years ago, but I am constantly reinforcing (fighting the urge to “cheat”) by envisioning what my poor body goes thru trying to deal with it! The addiction is a mental game – take a course in body chemistry and cellular biology. It will cure you!

I guess sugar is the new crack pipe! I myself love the Isogenix program, my only problem is that it leads to a dull life for a very social person. Two of my friends have stuck to isogenix religiously. When we have moments of complete melt downs and hunger, we call each other as one of us is always strong……the eating plan works and we know it…but to give up wine and yummy food is soooooo hard.
This past weekend we all fell off the wagon and ate and drank all we wanted…was very fun, but getting back on the horse again is so hard…is it worth going off???? The sugar, white flour withdrawl is tough..which shows how bad it is all for you. Day by day!!!!
I say keep that horrible stuff out of your homes!
If it was not for your support, I would not be so healthy!
Love you
Mawack…you are way too funny! I like that one…”sugar is the new crack pipe”. The problem is that the better you feel, the more social you want to be…hmmmm, looks like Isagenix has the answer to maintaining that life.
