USA Pro Cycling Challenge Gunnison to Aspen
It’s big and it’s coming through Aspen. Referred to as “America’s Race” the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge is taking place this August 22-28, 2011.

With more than one million spectators expected at the event, as well as national television exposure on NBC and VERSUS, the USA Pro Cycling Challenge will be one of the largest cycling events in United States history.

The world’s top professional cyclists will battle steep grades, hairpin turns and terrifying descents in a seven-day, 600-mile-long journey over the highest altitude course ever created. This Wednesday, August 24th, begins Stage Two, The Queen Stage, considered to be the crown jewel of the seven stages.  Riders will be racing from Gunnison to Aspen, summiting two 12,000-foot peaks in one day. This leg is considered to be the hardest, longest and highest of the race.

Featuring 17 of the world’s best cycling teams racing for seven days over more than 500 miles of mountainous Colorado terrain, the race will be carried by the three international broadcasters to reach cycling fans in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, in addition to the previously announced U.S. coverage by NBC Sports Group.

“Fans around the world now will be able to watch their favorite cyclists compete in the most demanding professional bike race ever held in America. This international exposure is unprecedented for a first year event,” said Shawn Hunter, CEO and co-chairman of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. “Through these partnerships, the majestic beauty of Colorado and all of the cities we visit along the seven-day route will be showcased to an international audience. The USA Pro Cycling Challenge will be a live postcard for Colorado and will highlight the growth of cycling in the U.S.”

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge is expected to be the largest spectator event in Colorado history and one of the largest sporting events to ever take place in the United States.  For seven consecutive days, 135 of the world’s top athletes will race across 518 miles through the majestic Rockies, reaching higher altitudes than they’ve ever had to endure, more than two miles in elevation.  It’s the best of the best in professional cycling, competing on a challenging course through some of America’s most beautiful scenery, including cities such as Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs.

Spectators of this race will see Olympians, World Champions and Tour de France competitors.  Fans worldwide will have access to the competition and riders like never before with the most advanced, interactive online, Smartphone and broadcast television experience presented to date in professional cycling.
