Ski Until You Feel the Burn

It was a bit of a rocky morning before we got started. Procrastinating getting the boys and Baddy up tending to the blog was a bad idea. I ended up sabotaging our carpool, causing Baddy and I having to split and conquer to get each boy to a different mountain.

“You’re messing with us,” I said to Hootie-Hoo’s AVSC coach when I arrived a bit frazzled. With a sparkle in his eyes, Head Pre-Devo Coach Jake Moe teased that the whole freestyle program was geared around ensuring that the Livingston boys were not all on one mountain together. I get that.

Waiting to reconvene with Baddy, I sank into the fireside big plush leather couches in the lodge at Aspen Highlands and got a kick out of all the skiers who were thrown off by the missing cubbies that once provided for free convenient storage. “Where are the cubbies,” they’d ask into the air, looking around at their surroundings to make sure they were on the right mountain. Where ARE the cubbies by the way, Aspen Ski Co? They were a nice convenience.

G4 & G5 were Opened on Aspen Highlands:

Finally Baddy appeared and we headed up to the Aspen Highlands Bowl. So what was it like up there with the 19 inches of new snow in the past week? The hike up was a bit laborious and it took me about 50 minutes to reach the top. With the new snow the steps weren’t pronounced and a bit slippy. I had to follow in Baddy’s large footsteps and with every steep step my quads and glutes screamed, threatening lockdown mode. No wonder why Cross Fit is all the rage up here. If you’re not fit, you have no fun. I would try it but I am too rebellious and don’t think I would do well with that kind of training. Maybe I’m wrong though.

At the top it was quiet, aside from four vivacious women in colorful clothing who were commenting on how the new ski patrol outfits cleaned up our patrollers who prefer to stay less spiffy. The ski patrol they were goading had bright blue eyes and icicles hanging from his mustache and shyly accepted the flirtatious taunting.

Skiing down G5 there were powder stashes to be had but you had to watch out for rocks and other obstacles like roots and baby trees. My legs were still burning and my feet added to the pain party in my old ski boots. Also, my new Armada skis were throwing me off just a bit. It’s tough getting accustomed to the new way of skiing on those rocker skis but once I found the freshies, it all fell into place and I floated through the soft fluffy flakes. Life was good…and it’s still snowing!
