Closing Day at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen
Yesterday marked the beginning of the end of the ski season with our favorite gentle mountain, Buttermilk, closing.
I’m always a bit conflicted when the mountains start to close. The weather is so beautiful that I am ready to break out my biking shorts. I can also hike the mountains with Muki. But if it dumps, which we all pray for, it can be some of the most amazing skiing conditions of the year. Thankfully, most of us have mole skins so we can still have at it, without the lifts being open. This year though I’m not sure how much skinning I will be getting in for the snow is melting fast and furiously. If you don’t believe in global warming I’d like to hear your reasons as to why.
I managed to hike before the Red Bull rail jam. It has always been a dream of mine to design a t-shirt that says, “Body by Buttermilk” and merit the status to actually wear it. I’ll talk about that later.
Red Bull Rail Jam
Anyway, the competition was for ages 13+ but they allowed Thumper to compete which he was most excited for since he was competing against a few of his coaches and Torin Yater-Wallace. He gave it his all, climbing the hill for rail access as many times as his legs would allow him in the 45 minute jam. He rocked!
While Brev was in the event Axel and I witnessed a skier dressed in a rabbit costume, quite possibly the one in the photo below, over-gap an enormous jump and land on his back (it is the jump in the background of the next photo). One thing is for certain, something was broken. I almost threw up. Axel looked at me and reassured me that he takes jumping seriously and would never take risks, that didn’t stop my body from shaking.

We got out of there as soon as the rail jam was over. The party was clearly not geared toward families, even though it is known as the family mountain, and that’s all I’m saying. Sometimes I truly wish that I could blog anonymously for I would say a whole hell of a lot more.
I’m curious to know what you think. So tell me. And if you were at the party, tell me more.
In the meantime, here are some fun photos:
