Après Ski Anyone?
It takes a whole lot of energy, determination and commitment to keep up with the pace that Aspen sets. Many of us would like to think that we can keep up with it all and others of us don’t have any desire to insert themselves into that game …. EXCEPT when the Aprés Ski Cocktail Classic comes to town. That’s when we try our best to keep up.
Founded in 2013 to celebrate the union of the Après-ski experience and the craft of the cocktail, the classic takes partying to an upscale level by bringing in cocktail connoisseurs like The Cocktail Ninja (Trevor Schneider), brand ambassador for Reyka, and The Cocktail Guru (Jonathan Pogash)
This year we decided to get ourselves better acquainted with the heart of the classic by getting up early to take first gondola up to interview the brand ambassadors. On the gondola with me was; Mixologist Anthony Bohlinger; Hendrick’s Ambassadors Mattias Dylan Horseman and Mark Stoddard; and Glenfiddich Ambassador, Mitch Bechard. While on the gondola I asked them what the life of a Brand Ambassador was like and they confirmed that it is a grand one, traveling the world, shmoozing with the big guys, keeping the energy alive and real as the spokespeople for high marque spirits such as; Hennessy, Glenfiddich, Hendrick’s Gin, Stoli and Don Julio, but keeping a healthy balance is an art form and takes a certain someone to fill those shoes comfortably, without slipping off into an abysmal darkness. These guys seemed to have had it all figured out.
An extroverted introvert, I needed to take breaks from it all and zoom over to Aspen Highlands to bust out a bowl hike in between accepting spoonfuls of caviar and shots of Fortaleza in the Private Reserve Room. The side parties I left up to Alex Blanco, Kelby Strohm and Rob Hollis to cover and they showed up to as many snow parties, pop-up bars, demonstrations, fireside chats, spirit-paired dinners and on-mountain events as they could when they weren’t working their other jobs. I did however, end the classic with a bang by participating in The Great Après Ski Pub Crawl sponsored by “We Toast” where ten bars in Aspen created signature cocktails with a goal to win the “Best Aprés Ski Cocktail.”
Blending in with a joyous pack we wove from one bar to the next, tasting all the crafted cocktails. If I had my druthers, I would have stuck with Fortaleza Tequila straight up, without the sugar but the cocktails were so delicious I couldn’t help but try them all … ending up at the “We Toast” cannabis Loopr bus, at which point the extroverted introvert opted out and let the rest of the pack enjoy my experience for me.
It’s a good time inserting oneself into the sub-cultural scenes that pop up when events rolls in, and the Après Ski Cocktail Classic is one that we will delve into once again in 2018, because we like a challenge, and because we like searching for new treasures that we may have missed the year before.
