Aspen Historical Society Opening: The Durrance Collection

Aspen Historical Society Opening: The Durrance Collection is on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 from 4-6pm at the Wheeler/Stallard Museum. The evening will feature the opening of The Durrance Collection, a new photographic display in the Archive Building Community Gallery, as well as the exhibit “bayer & bauhaus: how design shaped aspen” on display in the Wheeler/Stallard Museum. Admission will be free at both the Wheeler/Stallard Museum and the Holden/Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum on July 2nd, in celebration of the openings.

The Durrance Collection

In 2018 the Durrance family donated a collection of more than 600 images taken by Margaret “Miggs” Durrance as well as film shot by Dick Durrance. The Durrance Collection, on display this summer in the AHS Archive Building Community Gallery, features select photographs by Margaret, whose images appeared in national magazines such as LIFE, Look, Sports Illustrated and National Geographic. The Durrances’ long history in the area and their immense contributions to the development of Aspen and Snowmass are reflected in the 90 + images curated for the display. The Collection was accessioned with support from the Fred & Elli Iselin Foundation; it is available to view online at www.archiveaspen.org.

Bayer & Bauhaus

The exhibition “bayer & bauhaus: how design shaped aspen” in the second floor galleries of the Wheeler/Stallard Museum delves into the profound, but often unnoticed, influence of Herbert Bayer’s work on Aspen, Colorado. The never-before-exhibited Bayer Collection offers a unique view into his extensive works – both fine art and commercial – sharing Bayer’s lasting impact through preliminary sketch studies, original prints, architectural drawings, graphic design works, historical photographs, and more. The exhibit is presented as part of Bauhaus 100: Aspen, a community-wide celebration of the centenary of the German art school, Bauhaus. Providing historical context for the local celebration, the exhibit is a must-see for anyone interested in Aspen’s past and present, art, design, architecture, and more.

Aspen Real Life

The colors are changing early due to the drought but they sure are vibrantly popping out through the haze blowing in from the California fires. Nature keeps giving.

FROM CBS: Because the color change is driven primarily by daylight, the colors are guaranteed change regardless of other factors like drought. But according to Forest Entomologist Dr. Dan West at the Colorado State Forest Service, “the drought could cause colors to peak days earlier than usual and the intensity of the color may be diluted compared to years when precipitation is adequate”. “This is because dry conditions stress aspen stands”, says West.

As of August 27, more than 90% of Colorado is experiencing at least severe drought including the entire Denver metro area. And about 35% of the state is experiencing extreme drought including many mountain areas.
