The Aspen Art Museum 2019 “Heavenly Rapture” ArtCrush Summer Gala Celebration

ArtCrush 2019

The Aspen Art Museum 2019 “Heavenly Rapture” ArtCrush Summer Gala Celebration took place last week. I attended with my son Axel, fresh out of pre-college summer school at California College of the Arts.

“Aspen, as we know, is a town of oenophiles,” said Aspen Art Museum director Heidi Zuckerman, “and many AAM donors and patrons are among the most knowledgeable international collectors of both art and wine anywhere.”

Heavenly Rapture

Having never been to ArtCrush before, we both walked in eyes wide opened to the scene, the artwork, and the fashion (guests were dressed in their interpretation of “Heavenly Rapture,” a theme chosen from “Merlot”, an art piece by Aspen Award for Art Honoree, Lisa Yuskavage).

Strolling around observing the major works of contemporary art displayed on the walls we walked with our heads leaning in to one another, whispering our observations and taking mental notes on the art, the industry, the collectors and the artists, taking every opening to practice the art of conversation. We have been immersing ourselves into the local art world, touring the art festivals & fairs, the galleries and art receptions, ArtCrush was the crème de la crème of events.

The 2019 Aspen Award for Art Honoree presentation was given to Lisa Yuskavage. Yuskavage creates ethereal, fantastical landscapes replete with voluptuous, sexualized figures. Taking pictorial cues from Old Master, Romantic, and Impressionist traditions, Yuskavage broadens and challenges their conventions, adding decidedly contemporary colors, forms, and meaning to the traditional genres of landscape and portrait paintings.

“We drop 10 bottles of wine on each table, and let me tell you, they are spectacular,” said Jay Fletcher, who hand-curates the selections.
Over the years, ArtCrush guests have been feted with the finest wines from the world’s most prestigious producers as they bid on the auction items. The aforementioned Chateau Rothschild from Bordeaux, the Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay from Australia’s Margaret River and, of course, a collection of fine burgundies featuring names like Domaine Gros and Domaine De La Romanée-Conti, have all been poured over the years at ArtCrush.
“We pour 800 bottles of wine each year and every one of them is a keeper,” Fletcher said with pride.
