FirstBank Teams Up With Habitat for Humanity Roaring Fork

In late August, FirstBank was proud to team up with Habitat for Humanity Roaring Fork and Coldwell Banker Mason Morse, for a one-day build in the Basalt Vista Affordable Community. This housing development, located behind Basalt High School, seeks to fill the housing gap between the high resort area cost of living, and actual wages. The 27 new affordable homes will be allocated to teachers and others in the local RFV workforce.

“We are grateful to the Habitat and Coldwell Banker Mason Morse teams for allowing us FirstBankers to contribute to such an important project for this community,” said Dave Portman, FirstBank Market President-Roaring Fork. “FirstBank has a long history of working with Habitat buyers on their mortgage needs, and we look forward helping members of this community achieve the dream of home ownership at Basalt Vista.

“We believe deeply in our mission of ‘banking for good’ for our customers, communities and employees. The Basalt Vista Affordable Community directly aligns with that mission by providing affordable housing, and in turn, allowing our community to grow with the very best people and resources.”

While the local Habitat has been building homes with lower income families for almost 20 years, there is a growing need for housing for middle income workers who provide vital services to our community.

Habitat for Humanity Roaring Fork Valley Goal

“The goal of this project is to provide housing to all who hold jobs that are crucial to the well-being of our children and community, but cannot afford to live close to where they work,” said Amy French, Habitat for Humanity Roaring Fork volunteer coordinator and family services director. “We hope to create a model that can be adopted in communities that face similar affordable housing limitations throughout the state. We were proud to work with FirstBank for the Aug. 30 build, and we commend their commitment to providing affordable housing in Colorado.”

Net Zero Buildings

In addition to providing affordable housing to the community, these homes are NET ZERO buildings. Meaning they produce as much energy in a year as they consume. The model in achieving this result is to build as efficiently as possible upfront, by meeting or beating strict new energy codes; then installing onsite renewable energy systems to produce that power where it is needed.

Habitat for Humanity Roaring Fork Applications

Applications for Phase 2 of Basalt Vista will be open through Oct. 18, and are available at HabitatRoaringFork.org/Basalt-Vista. Information sessions are available at the job site trailer (600 Southside Drive) on Sept. 25, Oct. 2 and Oct. 9, from 4-6 p.m.

Aspen Real Life

The colors are changing early due to the drought but they sure are vibrantly popping out through the haze blowing in from the California fires. Nature keeps giving.

FROM CBS: Because the color change is driven primarily by daylight, the colors are guaranteed change regardless of other factors like drought. But according to Forest Entomologist Dr. Dan West at the Colorado State Forest Service, “the drought could cause colors to peak days earlier than usual and the intensity of the color may be diluted compared to years when precipitation is adequate”. “This is because dry conditions stress aspen stands”, says West.

As of August 27, more than 90% of Colorado is experiencing at least severe drought including the entire Denver metro area. And about 35% of the state is experiencing extreme drought including many mountain areas.
