8/25 Community Read: Beyond the Book – Taking Action Toward Resilience

Join Aspen Words for an engaging virtual conversation with Laura Bartels, executive director of the Mindful Life Program and an educator with 17 years of experience in the field of mindfulness, for a presentation on building resilience.

Unexpected change and challenge is part of life, and we face it on both individual and societal levels. From the far-flung extremes of war-torn Aleppo to the pandemic’s effects right here in the Roaring Fork Valley, conflict and disruption are universal to the human condition. We hear that humans are resilient, but it’s not a given. How do we cultivate resiliency for ourselves and our communities so that we can thrive and flourish, even amid unprecedented change and challenge?

Laura will discuss the scientific bases and practical actions for improving resilience, with tie-ins to “The Beekeeper of Aleppo” and the challenges faced by its protagonists. Laura’s presentation will be 45 minutes in length, followed by a 15-minute Q&A period. Afterward, participants are invited to stay on for a 30-minute break-out room conversation to unpack the presentation and interact using guided prompts. Laura Bartels is the executive director of the Mindful Life Program, which brings personal and professional training in mindfulness and skills in living a meaningful life to a wide range of audiences. Her work helping people and communities put values into action offers a valuable foundation and perspective on the importance of inner sustainability.

Poet and artist Precious Okoyomon transformed the Aspen Art Museum rooftop, installing a mixture of sculpture and organic matter to create a garden based on themes of pleasure, abundance, and desire. Okoyomon will be in residence in Aspen on multiple occasions, developing and transforming the project over its entire duration, making it a live and responsive commission that will literally grow and replenish over time.Okoyomon will also introduce a series of collaborations with musicians to create organic soundtracks for the garden that will follow the changing seasons. Each musician will use a combination of external samples and sounds recorded from within the garden to compose an individual response to it. Visitors will be encouraged to move throughout the garden while respecting protocol for social distancing to experience these multisensory (and in part, edible) elements. The exhibition is curated by AAM Curator at Large Claude Adjil.#aspenartmuseum#openingreception#artmatters#aspenevents#aspenartmuseum ...

Courtney Sanders, Founder of The Bipolar Design will be there tonight at Aspen Strong: Promoting Mental Health in the Roaring Fork Valley Time to Talk.Bipolar Divine provides a platform of resources for those who suffer from bipolar disorder. Courtney has experienced all aspects of the spectrum and when she was so hypo manic that she forgot what language she spoke, or so depressed that she couldn’t walk her dog, there weren’t resources or options outside of the classic arsenal of psychiatric drugs that are so commonly prescribed in the U.S. Courtney spent years on medications. Some made her hair fall out, some made her gain weight, some lose weight. Some destroyed the biome of her stomach, but all of them compromised the equilibrium of her mind. She would spend the better part of ten years carrying shame and trying to be perfect within the bipolar experience— which only exacerbated her symptoms. Courtney went off her meds and tried self-medicating.#timetotalk#supportingmentalhealth#aspenstrong ...
