Ajax Adventure Camp

Ajax Adventure Camp

Some of our favorite stories on AspenRealLife are the ones of locals who have stayed committed to their dreams, Danny Hundert, Owner and Founder of Ajax Adventure Camp, is one of these locals.

As one who lived for the summer sleepaway camps he attended annually as a child, it was Danny’s life-long ambition to start his own camp, where the learning aspect becomes hidden within the outrageously fun experience. Danny gets that kids shy away from the word “school” but that they do in reality love to learn while playing outside.

The “ultimate” mountain camp for children, there are three types of programs within Ajax Adventure Camp;  Ajax Adventure Camp (ages 7-15); Ajax Jr Camp (ages 5 & 6); and Ajax Adventure Ranch Camp, where kids can stay for the week in Tipi Villages.

The Ajax Ranch Camp is located on their ranch camp above Ruedi Reservoir on 200 private acres surrounded by National Forest. A place where campers have the freedom to come up with ideas and help build out fun features to add to the camp’s activities. They are not forced to participate in any activity if they do not want to, as they will have many options to choose from each activity period.

Parents from all over the world bring their children to this camp, and as their children play hard in the great outdoors they too can enjoy their own vacation, but a word to the wise, for those parents who prefer an East Coast type camp with manicured lawns, this may not be the camp for you … or … if you want to break your kid in to real outdoor living, here’s your chance. Take it from me, someone who has been sending her boys to this camp for years, your kids will be begging for more.

The certifications of the counselors are impressive and all are certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR/AED. These senior counselors with positions such as; “Director of Fun & Adventure Tech,” range from Ivy League graduates to local teachers, and are accompanied by junior counselors with ample knowledge of the outdoors and the Aspen area.

The camp begins at the end of June and fills up fast with kids who return every year, so hurry over to their website to get more information, see more photos and register, and keep up with them by liking their Facebook page.

[su_box title=”Ajax Adventure Camp”]Nestled in the rocky mountains, surrounded by streams, lakes and mountain peaks, Ajax Adventure Ranch Camp’s Tipi village is home to our adventurous sleepaway campers. Here on the ranch, kids will be given the choice of activities ranging from rock climbing, paddleboarding, archery, fishing, and cowboy paintball to rockets, crafts, survival skills, camping, and barnyard activities. We have 100’s of other activities for campers to choose from throughout the summer. Campers will also help raise the ranch pigs, chickens, goats, and other farmyard animals. This will be a true adventure sleepaway camp where campers, can build new structures and camp traditions while shaping the future of Ajax Adventure Ranch Camp. For campers that like a rustic sleepaway environment with tons of activities, an ever-flowing fun atmosphere, and a true sleepaway experience in the high rockies, this is the place. If campers prefer a sleepaway camp with manicured lawns, maid service, and daily massages, we recommend somewhere in New York. We offer 8 different week-long sessions throughout the summer (each session begins on a Sunday and ends on a Saturday). Campers may attend up to 4 sessions. Dropoff and pickup is at the Aspen Middle school and we will transport campers to the ranch (1+ hr into the mountains from Aspen). We have two unique sessions this summer in partnership with: the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (the July 10th session); emphasizing wilderness survival skills, animal tracking, and other activities that the experts at ACES will help deliver, and the Roaring Fork Conservancy (the Aug 6th session); focusing on ‘all things water’ including home-made fly tying and fly fishing. Campers staying multiple sessions are welcome to spend “changeover” day at camp (free of charge).[/su_box]
