AREDAY ASPEN 2018- Time to Smarten up

We are truly endurance athletes going straight from Food and Wine into AREDAY and Ideas Fest.  This type of shift in mental and physical intake is not for sissies. We drink and eat and explore the world with epicurean chops, bacchanalian expertise and then tie our shoelaces, tighten our belts, sharpen our pencils, open our ethos and dig in to saving the planet and protect biodiversity.  At least we should take a swing on this pendulum of learning that passes through our town. We better pay attention to these leaders of conservation and the new “one planet” because let’s face it…without them, and our heeding their calls to action, there won’t be any Food and Wine. You can’t have honey without the bees baby.  Even Marcus Aurelius said as much in 170AD. The difference is the new generation of conservationist is delivering the same message but with new symbols, technology, language and a new urgency.

Here are some of the battle cries and the people behind them :

Meet Canada’s Best Musical Artist of the Year- Parvati.  Get beyond her angelic vocals and golden-lock presence and here is the equally angelic force behind MAPS (the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary) and founder of  She spoke eloquently last week in Aspen during AREDAY on the “death spiral” of the Arctic melt.  She gathered her troops and has squashed the seismic testing off Clyde River, Nunavut, and thanks to her efforts Canada is moving forward with a marine park in the Lancaster Sound area in Canada’s Arctic ocean, twice the size of Nova Scotia. Polar ice is our planet’s air conditioning system. Go to and learn more about helping the planet stay as cool as we are up at 8,000′.

[su_quote cite=”” url=””]The Arctic ice cools our planet. But the vulnerable Arctic ecosystem is threatened by rising temperatures and increased exploitation. I call for the realization of MAPS for the safety of our planet now and for generations to come.[/su_quote] Sign the petition:

Next up James Brundidge of Nature Needs Half.  He is one of the leaders of NN1/2 building international enthusiasm to protect 50% of wild nature by 2050 and is just back from filming with Ashley Judd and the Bonobos in the Congo.  Half may seem like a lot, but James and his international coalition have a game plan in place.  Go to Natureneedshalf .org to become a member and help achieve this in our region. Buy a Morpho Peleides from and 10 percent off the top goes straight to their efforts.

Christopher Salata and Susannah Choe of Peace Accelerators will win over even the most reluctant participant. They know, like all millennials seem to, that peace and sustainability are inseparable.  One earth, one tribe and one flag will fly September 21, 2018 on World Gratitude Day to give the planet a new symbol and identity.  Christopher knows how powerful language and story is.  He believes we can reset our brains with new patterns that will breed new action. For instance, let’s rename Climate Change an “Ecological Conundrum”. Youth leadership and engagement is reframing language and symbols to create a “flourishing environment” and a currency of abundance versus scarcity, access versus ownership (think Uber and furnished co-living versus personal vehicles and fat mortgages).

Danny Copeland uses 360 VR underwater photography in the documentaries “Chasing Coral” and “The Mini Mantas of Maria” to place the viewer in the center of the story which has led to more effective fundraising efforts for marine conservation proving our technological advances can effect change.

In sum: Our planet has the symptoms of cancer.  We are a part of the planet. Do we fight back? Stay in action? Or do we relax into the view that this is just a part of natural evolution. I for one would like to have my cake and eat it too from my privileged perch in the beautiful outdoors of Aspen. However, cake requires ingredients that require a planetary biodiversity as piebald as our summer calendar of events.  Please take a moment and click on a link above to learn more, get involved, be a part of a new story, re-train the brain to action muscle.  Then get outside, grab a bike, start a hike, cast a rod, pop a cork, gulp some water and celebrate the interconnectedness of it all.

How Nature Heals, A Story From #l....As the story from the forest unraveled while we were skinning through it, other stories were revealed and I began to collect the information for a possible future children’s book; the snow crystals sparkling like diamonds in the sun, the white ice crystals of hoarfrost layered upon the snow, and as I absorbed the textures with my eyes, I realized that I also felt the textures from within and it was inexplicably soothing. We have been forced to slow down during this Pandemic, allowing us the opportunity to reflect deeply about our place in the world. For many of us revelations are happening daily, but if we are filled with anxiety, or can’t move beyond our depression, we will not allow the revelations to seep in and we will miss the magic. Meditation helps immensely to create mindfulness about the chatter that leads to the anxiety, as does listening to the journeys of others as they get raw in their pain while enduring heart break and loss. As we repeatedly witness, the world can be a scary place where humanity can be careless, selfish and hateful, but humanity and compassion can also heal us to a place where we are able to see the world as healing rather than a place we want to escape from, but you need to get raw with it. Face it head on, so that you can create space and breathe, which will allow you to slowly shed the anxiety and the depression so that you can strengthen from within and persevere, no matter what is going on around you. Get outside in nature, and nurture it as it nurtures you.Read More at ...
