Artist Reception & Talk with Linda Smith
February 9 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm UTC-6
The Art Base presents artist Linda Smith for a reception and talk at the Basalt Regional Library on Friday, February 9, at 5:00 pm—art talk begins at 5:15pm.
Linda Smith is an artist and art educator who started a non-profit while living in Kigali, Rwanda, called the “TEOH Project”, which provides cameras and art classes to children in Rwanda, Ghana, and the Bronx, NY. She has been commissioned by the UN to provide photographic classes to survivors and former perpetrators of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
In her newest body of work, entitled Sojourners, Smith re-purposes photographs of immigrants coming into the United States in the early 20th century. She transfers the images onto papers and fabrics and dips the transfers into resin and wax to transform old photographs into new images.
“The series tells a fragmented story of emotions, moods, and moments that alter these photographs into something familiar,” Smith describes.
Linda Smith’s work will be on view in the Basalt Regional Library art display case February 4-28, 2018. The Art Base works in collaboration with the library to curate monthly exhibitions featuring local artists.
