Past is Prologue
October 6, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm UTC-6
The Carbondale Clay Center presents a particularly relevant show this month as part of it’s 20th Anniversary Celebration. “Past Is Prologue” displays the work of the Carbondale ClayCenter’s Founder and first Executive Director (1997-2004), Diane Kenney.
Diane describes her work with these words,“In years past I have produced bodies of high-fired, functional ceramic work, fired in my wood and soda kilns. In recent years I have also been expressing
my painterly instincts and exploring a wide range of color, texture and surface treatments in terra cotta.”
“Past is Prologue” will include terra cotta wall tiles, wood fired and salt/soda fired stoneware and porcelain, all created in the last year. Diane explains,” This show is not a retrospective but it does
reflect my journey and my work, using a variety of methods. Some pieces represent an attempt to re-visit an old idea and try it again in a new context… I am trying to create the truth of the moment I am
living in, not what I have created before.” “I want my work, proudly and humbly to hold its own space.” Diane says, “ Lao Tzu-Tao de Ching once said, “We turn clay to make a vessel, but it is on the space where there is nothing that the usefulness of that vessel depends. In less abstract terms, I am all about form and surface..with some elements of surprise.”
“Past is Prologue” will be on display in the Carbondale Clay Center Gallery from October 2nd through the end of the month with an opening reception on Friday, October 6th (First Friday) from 6-8pm
