Time Travel Tuesdays – Aspen to the Olympics: Our Legacy of Youth Sports

February 6 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm UTC-6

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 11:30am on Tuesday, repeating until March 6, 2018

The Roaring Fork Valley’s alpine geography and Rocky Mountain climate make the area a breeding ground for athletes of many disciplines. Over several decades, and in large part thanks to organization on behalf of volunteers, youth sports clubs have developed to support local kids’ athletic endeavors. Aspen Historical Society’s 2018 Time Travel Tuesday series will feature the history of winter-season youth sports organizations in moderated panel discussions with past and present athletes, coaches, parents, and club administrators from: the two local figure skating clubs (Aspen Skating Club and Revolutions of Aspen); Aspen Junior Hockey, and Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club. The conversations, supported by historic photos from the AHS collection, will explore how each organization has impacted the careers and lives of athletes across several generations, highlighting the stories behind the clubs, the accomplishments of their graduates, and the many services the groups provide to our community. To celebrate the spirit of the 2018 Winter Olympics, the final panel will feature athletes with connections to our small mountain town who have reached the pinnacle of their sports, to represent the United States at the Olympic games. This final presentation, hosted in the theater at the Wheeler Opera House, will focus on the Olympians’ experiences with sports as kids: how did different clubs, groups of people, specific coaches, and perhaps even the support of a community, shaped the many roads from Aspen to the Olympics.

These events are held at the Wheeler Opera House. The first 3 will be in the lobby and the last one will be in the theater.

Join us on Tuesdays starting February 6 through March 6, 2018.  There will be no event on Tuesday February 27, 2018.

The event is $10 and free for Aspen Historical Society Lixiviator members.
