Interviewing Film Directors: Aspen Shortsfest - Aspen Real Life

Interviewing Film Directors: Aspen Shortsfest

Were you able to attend the Aspen Shortsfest this past week? I went to the family program and felt a reconnection to the world of shorts. I was also lucky enough to run into a filmmaker while hiking Buttermilk and a spontaneous interview ensued revealing the magic of the festival.

Wade, Tucker and I went up for the Aspen Shortsfest family program this past Saturday and the films were as moving and inspiring as ever. The first film, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, by William Joyce, brought tears to my eyes for the beautiful celebration of books and the “transformative powers of storytelling” as described in the Aspen Shortsfest program.

But the film that hit me the hardest was The Little Boy and the Beast by Johannes Weiland and Uwe Heidschotter. Being capable of  beastly behavior myself, I could completely relate to this incredibly authentic seven minute film, told through the eyes of a young boy who endures the aftermath of his parents divorce.

It’s a crime that I don’t block out this week every year to escape from it all, and you know I need escaping, and dive into The Wheeler Opera house for five days to watch films and connect with the incredibly talented filmmakers but I am determined to change that by volunteering and renewing my membership.

Yesterday, while hiking up Buttermilk, slightly behind the canine uphill, I stopped a beautiful couple slowly making their way up the mountain. “You’re not American, are you?” I asked stopping to take a photo of their classic European style. It just happened to be Rene Frelle Petersen and his girlfriend Jette Soendergaard. Rene is the film Director/Writer for the short, “Going Nowhere,” and BAFTA winner (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) and they agreed to a spontaneous interview.
