Mustaches in Movember in Aspen

Mustaches in Movember in Aspen

In this month of giving thanks, I’d like to express how thankful I am for the men who are still in my life. Those still standing strong, reposed and elegant in a stressful economy. Due to high insurance deductibles, many of these men do not take the time to visit their doctors but this is changing thanks to The Prostate Conditions and Education Council, and MoVember, a global event held every November to raise awareness for men’s health issues. For six years now, I have heard about this event and seen handsome men with mustaches walking around town. This year I was determined to participate with my new official photographer, and sister, Michele Cardamone of MicheleCardamonePhotography. Together we attended an event at Finbarr’s, one of the main local venues for MoVember gatherings. With the fireplace cozying up the room in this Irish pub and kitchen, we roamed the party, taking pictures of the phenomenal volunteers who have been spreading men’s health awareness through Aspen; Dr. Gail King of Aspen Center for Women’s HealthPamela Herr the Executive Director of HealthAspen, Finbarr’s proprietors Denis and Kelly O’Donovan and Peter Helburn, Master Event Planner. We also met the men sporting mustaches, slowly transforming from scraggly to debonair.

Dr. King stressed the importance for men to get tested for  Testicular and Prostate Cancer every year, for young men between the ages of 15 and 39 are most often affected with Testicular Cancer and 1 in 6 men will get Prostate Cancer. Hopefully, these statistics are changing with local free PSA tests administered at Aspen Optimal Health every November. A PSA is a blood test to check the health of your prostate, the gland which aids in reproduction. Last year they gave 78 tests and this year they sold out after administering 127 tests. Awareness seems to be catching on. When asked why mustaches were chosen to create awareness, Pamela’s response made so much sense. “Because it’s easy. All men have to do is drink a beer and grow a mustache. And, it’s fun.” This was confirmed by every mustached man we took photos of, many of whom have lost loved ones to cancer. We met a three time cancer survivor, a strapping young man with a twinkle in his baby blue eyes who spoke to us of how this event brings together the friendly subculture of Aspen, reminding him of his home town in Mississippi. Both Pamela and Dr. King emphasized the incredible Grassroots movement that made this event happen in our town (the event is more reknown in Australia and New Zealand). Community Banks of Colorado has become an integral part of this movement, encouraging their bankers to donate gifts toward the raffle tickets that are sold to benefit Movember and HealthAspen. Other local sponsors and businesses involved in this event are; Aspen Optimal Health, HealthAspen, The Aspen Times, Finbarr’s and L’Hostaria.

The Movember Foundation uses the money raised to fund two programs: an awareness and education program that significantly increases the understanding and reduces the stigmas of the health risks that men face, and Movember’s Global Action Plan that accelerates key outcomes in prostate cancer research by facilitating global research collaboration projects.

If you, or a loved one, missed the testing, call your doctor and schedule one in. It’s also not too late for you to celebrate the end of Movember,“An event that is marked across the US (and around the world) with a series of Gala Partés to thank our Mo Bros and Sistas for their outstanding fundraising efforts during the month of Movember.”

End of Movember Gala and Disco Party:

Locally, Mo Bros (dressed to suit their Mo) and Mo Sistas (dressed to suit their Mo Bro) come together at Finbarr’s for their Gala & Disco Loungeon Movember 30th, from 8pm-Friday. Dress 70’s style and show off your moustache growing efforts. Those in the know are calling this party, “Tippler Tuesday”.

More info on how to Grow Your Mo:

Visit the Movember web page, “Dedicated to and for the moustache aficionado.  For the person who, regardless of culture, fashion or age, appreciates the moustache, what it stands for, what it says about a man and what it can achieve when worn with pride and conviction. It’s here you’ll find a wealth of information on the Mo; some practical and some geared more towards improving your Mo general knowledge. We welcome you to lose yourself in all things Mo because, “Every man deserves to grow a little piece of luxury.” More Mo Photos.

From the Movember Website:

Too many men are dying from prostate cancer and too many men are being wrongly treated due to the inadequacies of the current PSA test. However, until an improved test is found, it is the best option available and we will continue to encourage men over the age of 40, who’ve got a family history of prostate cancer or of African American decent, and for all other men at 50 to get tested based on an informed decision made in consultation with their physician.
