It's amazing the treasures one finds when one slow

It's amazing the treasures one finds when one slows down to take an old pup out for daily slow walks. Having been up in Aspen for 5 years, I forgot about this old Fairview Cemetery that Loki guided me to where I discovered Merino Bruno Fiou, AKA “Mr. Basalt”, born July 29, 1940 in Glenwood Springs and died March 6, 2011 at Valley View Hospital.

This from the Aspen Times: A constant staple of the Town of Basalt, Merino was always on the search for a treasure that few of us cherished. He had a love of hats and was always seen wearing a different one. He walked many miles each day back and forth into town.

Many local merchants of different stores knew him by name. Merino was very proud of his money jar that he accumulated by turning in his aluminum cans that he collected. Merino had many jobs throughout the years including trash pickup and working at Two Rivers Cafe washing dishes. He liked to help out wherever needed, even volunteering when they built the playground. Merino was very fond of River Days and loved to listen to the music in town. With a constant smile on his face, he was very friendly and never knew a stranger. Merino loved the annual yard sale at his house, looked forward to sifting through all the stuff, he found a treasure in things that other people threw out.

Did anyone know Merino?

To fully immerse oneself in the colors there is no better way then to view it from above and then get in it for hours at a time. The view from the top of the trail made me gasp it

The view from the top of the trail made me gasp it was so beautiful. Sopris was totally covered in clouds except for one patch of snow peaking out, sun rays bursting through the clouds shrouding the land in the most ethereal light. Ran down through the red mud, hail, lightning and crashing thunder. My own exciting Grimm's Fairy Tale. Just me, the woods and the elements. ~ @jilliansreallife

Another amazing gathering last night with @aspenbusinessconnect members and Connie Baker, "Queen Bee", CEO and Head Distiller at the @marbledistillingco.

It was inspirational to hear Connie's journey to becoming the most sustainable distiller in the world!

"The distillery is zero-waste .... nothing goes down the drain, from the process water to being 100% recycled to all of the energy coming off the stills being captured to heat our building. All silage is recycled to the farms from which it came, and is used as supplementary animal feed. We call what we do 'grain to glass to ground.' It's a beautiful sustainable cycle all happening within our community." ~ Connie Baker

Get your vert on! ...

Ute Trail to the top of Aspen Mountain is a steep uphill 6.2 mile, 3042 vert trail located on the East side of Aspen, Colorado. It is rated as difficult. Dogs are able to use this trail if leashed. Pack out your trash! Wear hiking shoes with good treads. Bring clothing for mountain weather and plenty of food and water. Make sure to not start too late so that you are not walking down in the dark.
