Shopping Local in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley: A Holiday Gift Guide Series

Many of you got your shopping done over Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but for we slackers the panic is setting in on making the holidays special. We are already on day 3 of Chanukah and still have shopping to do, and Christmas is lurking around the corner. How do the holidays creep up so slowly and then pounce with claws out to snarl, “we’re here”! The holidays are meant to be a time of celebration of life and family, not a time to accelerate into complete panic mode. But it’s all okay. We still have time. Every year we curate a special Holiday Gift Guide series, and this is the first in the series to get you started. So, retract the fangs, make yourself a hot toddy with whiskey, lemon and honey, cozy into your sheepskin slippers, put the logs on the fire and light a match or switch the switch, and take a stroll down our shopping local guides to find treasures in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley. Both Isa Catto (@isacattostudio on insta) and I have shared our ideas, so take a deep breath, let the panic subside and get into the beautifulness of what these holidays are meant to be all about, finding special treasures for our loved ones so that we can see their faces bloom into gorgeous smiles when opening their gifts. Our Holiday Gift Guide is a series that will keep coming out all month long.

Small Wonders at the Aspen Chapel

Now in its 13th year, “Small Wonders” is a treasure of an exhibit offering affordable local artwork for purchase. All the pieces are small, no bigger than 12 inches-by-12 inches. Each artist makes at least eight works for the show and most sell out. The show runs through Jan. 6.

The Carbondale Clay Cup Auction

The Cup Auction serves as one of the Clay Center’s largest fundraisers and features hundreds of original, handmade ceramic cups for bid via silent auction.  This year’s showcase will feature cups that range from quirky mugs to elegant tumblers, from wild shot cups to refined tea bowls, and everything in-between. With artists from around the country represented, there truly is something for everyone.

Anderson Ranch Arts Center Open House.

I always buy something handmade at one of these — usually all of these. The art is not mediocre and some of these artists fly under the radar because they have other jobs, or are not part of the blue chip art scene. These are the places where you can celebrate our talented local arts community, and more importantly, support them.

Why buy handmade?  It’s a great way to circumvent the stream of plastic, the trendy one off present and ubiquitous gear and get something affordable. And as an artist I can personally attest that it feels great when someone buys your work of art and you see it sail into the world. These events are also flat out fun and I see welcome faces from the artistic community at each of these venues. Small Wonders is still up, you can make the CMC Ceramics sale next year and don’t miss the Carbondale auction this Friday and Anderson Ranch next week!

Scout & Cellar Clean Crafted Wines From Paula Eaton

Wine is a tricky business, because when it comes to their growth cycle, grapes tend to march to the beat of their own drum. Their natural flavor, color and growing cycle is driven by nature. To capture sameness and establish predictability, producers rely on pesticides, chemical additives and sugars, which yields a product that tastes the same, bottle after bottle, year after year. Pesticides, chemical additives and sweetener also make it possible to maximize yields and hide flaws that may exist in those bottles, like bacteria and other unpleasant elements. Unfortunately, this processed wine is chemically-altered and completely unnatural, and you can taste it. Scout & Cellar Clean Wines offer a more natural, altogether better-tasting wine experience to everyone.

Blow Your Own Glass Ornament

Visit the Spiro Lyon Glass Studio and design and literally “BLOW” your own glass ornament with the help of their studio glass artists. All ages over 7 years welcome. They will be blowing on Sunday December 9th, and 16th. Call to reserve your spot… 970-274-1192. If you have a group that wants to make at least 8 ornaments, call and set up a day and time that works for your group. Ornaments cost $50/ea.

Spiro Lyon Glass was founded by Jacqueline Spiro-Balderson and Lee Lyon, glass artists who have been working with hot cast glass since 1990.  In 1993, Dylan Balderson joined the team with experience in glassblowing and an expertise in woodworking.  For the past 23 years, the three of them have been exploring the many aspects of glass for use in design, sculpture, craft, and architecture.

Spiro Lyon Glass discovered a unique mold making process that allows them to create thick panels of glass that are limitless in shape and design.  Each of their molds is hand carved which renders a raised motif on the surface of the glass panel.  They are the only artists in the world using this technique.

Their large scale work employs panels of glass which interact with adjacent panels through shape, color, and design.  These sections become expressive when viewed together as a whole.  It is these subtle revealing connections that are consistent throughout their sculptural work and architectural installations.
