The Best Children’s Summer Camp in Aspen

[su_heading size=”18″]Meet Owner and Founder of Ajax Adventure Camp, Danny Hundert[/su_heading]

Last year when writing an article on “Aspen Family Fun” for the St. Regis Magazine, Bespoke, one of the highlights of my research was meeting Owner and Founder of Ajax Adventure Camp, Danny Hundert.

When Danny walked into the French Cafe in the Aspen Airport Business Center, he looked as though he could have been one of the campers with his young face, athletic frame and shock of black hair, but as he spoke Danny’s maturity resounded in his passion for creating a fun atmosphere outside in Aspen’s wilderness where children ages 7-16 are engaged in such a manner that the learning aspect becomes hidden within the experience.

With a mission to, “Have fun while being safe,” the certifications of the counselors are impressive and all are certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR/AED. These senior counselors, ranging from Ivy League graduates to local teachers, are also accompanied by junior counselors with ample knowledge of the outdoors and the Aspen area. Camper to staff ratio does not exceed 5:1 in all activities.

Activities include hiking up to Mt. Sopris and Thomas Lakes as well as rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, rafting, horseback riding, archery, hatchet throwing, camping, polar bear club where they jump into the Devil’s Punch Bowl, cheffing (includes an Ironman Chef contest), floating, backpacking, arts & crafts, and so much more.

Ajax Adventure Camp was founded in 2010, when the year-long planning and permitting process began, and every year they build upon the year before with added features requested by both kids and counselors alike. ?This year they have expanded their overnight program and have added “Parent Camper Days”, where parents can camp with their kids on Sundays.

With permits both in the White River and Holy Cross National Forests, the camp has ample wilderness to backpack in and explore, depending on the age of the camper. When not backpacking the campers can be found at the ranch at Sustainable Settings collecting eggs, herding calves and chickens, collecting honey, cooking etc…The camp also has theme day . Themes range from dressing up formally, as superheros, in camo and more. It’s what children’s dreams are made of.

As stated on their website, Ajax Adventure Campers have the freedom to choose what they want to do. They are not forced to participate in any activity if they do not want to, as they will have many options to choose from each activity period. All ideas for activities are considered.

Parent’s from all over the world bring their children to this camp, and as their children play hard in the great outdoors they too can enjoy their own vacation. So here’s the question, why send your children off to a camp when you have it all here right in your backyard. And for those of you who live out of town and are looking for the perfect summer vacation, look no further.

The camp begins next week and is already almost full so hurry over to their website to get more information, see more photos and register and keep up with them by liking their Facebook page.
