Welcome to The Weekly Best. Every week I go through everything happening in Aspen, Snowmass, Basalt and Carbondale and tell you exactly what's worth your time. Bookmark the blog, because a new list drops every week.
It's Halloween week, and the town still belongs to us locals for a few more weeks before the lifts start spinning. I've narrowed it down to four. A long lunch, a cult classic, a legendary hip-hop show and one very big Saturday night. Here's where you'll find me.
Thursday, October 29: Lunch with Aspen Business Connect
1:30 PM · Eddy's Kitchen, Aspen
Before the costumes come out, come have lunch with us. Aspen Business Connect is a curated network of local business owners, creatives, entrepreneurs and professionals from all over the Roaring Fork Valley, and this lunch is all about getting out from behind our screens and meeting each other in real life.
Around the table: Sam Harvey of Harvey Preston Gallery, with a peek at the shows he's preparing for winter; Carlyn Porter, a City of Aspen epidemiologist with a sustainable fashion and styling brand; life coach Denise Tanguay of The Daily Shift Method; Derron C. Cloud of State Farm; Greer Mexic of Greer Interiors; real estate attorney Kimberly Ginsburg of Greenberg Traurig; financial advisor Simon Dogbe; and marketing and growth strategist Danica Weappa.
The point isn't to collect business cards. It's to sit down together, hear what everyone's working on this winter and see what comes from the conversation. It's open to current members and anyone curious about the network. Everyone's on their own tab, and space is intentionally limited, so RSVP. RSVP on Eventbrite
Friday, October 30: The Rocky Horror Picture Show at TACAW
8 PM (doors 7 PM) · TACAW, Basalt · $20 · 18+ with photo ID
Rocky Horror is never as fun at home. TACAW is screening it the night before Halloween, and they're embracing the traditions (yes, rice and water guns), so check their rules before you pack your prop bag. There's a limit of four tickets per person and all sales are final, so buy for your whole crew at once. Fishnets encouraged. Tickets
Want the full experience? The Crystal Theatre in Carbondale does it Saturday at 7 PM with a live shadow cast by the Roaring Divas and an afterparty.
Friday, October 30: Digable Planets at Belly Up
Doors 9 PM · Belly Up Aspen, 450 S. Galena St.
The Grammy-winning trio behind "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" is touring to celebrate 30 years of Blowout Comb, and seeing them in a room the size of Belly Up is a gift. It's the perfect excuse to wear your costume a night early. Tickets
Saturday, October 31: Halloween at the Golden Horn
8 PM to 2 AM · 400 E. Cooper Ave., Aspen
The Golden Horn is back, in the same spot where the original served Aspen from 1949 to the early '90s, and this is its first Halloween back. Since we lost Mi Chola, we've needed a place for the locals to gather on Halloween night, and I think this is it.
Expect late-night DJ sets by Golbus, Set Break & Friends and special guest Kordicimo, with sound and production by Aspen Music Pro. Come in costume and stay until close. goldenhornaspen.com
My Picks
If you only do one thing this week, make it lunch on Thursday. You'll leave with new friends before the weekend even starts. Then save your energy, because Saturday at the Golden Horn goes until 2 AM.
Tickets go fast this week, so check each venue before you head out. Happy Halloween, see you out there, and I'll be back next week with a new Weekly Best!
